Top 5 Christmas Heroes/Protagonists

by Tyler Feinstein

Christmas has had many amazing movies, cartoons and shows that have grabbed the hearts of millions of fanatics across the globe. But with almost every Christmas movie, there is always a protagonist that takes over the movie whenever they are on screen. In this article I will be ranking the top 5 Christmas heroes.

#5 Jack Frost-Rise of the Guardians (2012)

Jack was once an ordinary teenage boy living your average teenage life. One day he decided to play a game of hopscotch with his younger sister, Mary. Unfortunately things did not go to plan and his sister was in grave danger. Jack was able to save Mary but wasn’t able to save himself. The Man on the Moon, seeing Jack’s heroic sacrifice, decided to resurrect him in the new form of an immortal winter spirit now known as Jack Frost.

While Jack obtained immense power others could only dream of, he felt lonely as he could not be seen or heard by anyone. His life would then change again Santa Claus would summon Jack, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Sandman to fight against Pitch Black. Jack originally declined the offer to become a guardian as he felt he was underqualified. But Santa Claus’ ambition on uniting childhood heroes against a despicable evil did not waver and eventually persuaded Jack Frost to join the team.

#4 Frosty-Frosty the Snowman (1969)

Frosty is an interesting Christmas character due to his origins actually coming from the villain’s magical hat. Hinkle, the main antagonist is a terrible magician but was offered another chance by a school teacher to bring him in to entertain the class. After another poor performance by Hinkle, class was dismissed for winter break. But a gust of wind suddenly swept Hinkle’s hat away. Little did he know, this hat had a special secret, and Frosty the Snowman came to life. Every kid couldn’t believe a jolly walking and talking snowman came to life right in front of them and quickly befriended the snowman. However, Hinkle saw this as an opportunity to become a superstar and wanted his hat back. When Frosty refuses, Hinkle is obsessive in retrieving the hat as Frosty tries to protect the kids from the snowstorm while avoiding him at every turn.

#3 Rudolph-Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (1964)

Much like Frosty, Rudolph is also an old time classic. He was originally slated to become another member of Santa’s reindeer group pulling his sled. However, something was off about Rudolph, he had a very bright red nose. Rudolph’s father originally tried to cover it up with mud and even a fake nose but both attempts to help Rudolph blend in with the rest of the reindeer ultimately led to Rudloph leaving altogether.

Running away from your loved ones is usually a horrendous decision but it was the opposite in this case. Rudolph met new friends including ex Santa worker Heremy the elf, Sam the Snowman, silver and gold miner Yukon Cornelius. With his new friends, Rudolph had a boost in confidence and go on an unforgettable adventure.

#2 Gizmo-Gremlins (1984)

Randall Peltzer visits a Chinatown antique store to find something special for his son Billy. To his surprise he finds a small, furry creature called a Mogwai and is interested in buying it. The owner of the China Shop, Mr. Wing refuses to sell the little furball to Randall. However his grandson was glad to sell the Mogwai behind his back. The grandson told Randall 3 steps of taking care of the Mogawai. Don’t let it anywhere near light, don’t let it come into contact with water, and most importantly never feed it after midnight.

Randall returns home to Kingston falls and shows Billy his new Christmas present and is given the name “Gizmo”. Gizmo is extremely friendly and docile but has to be taken care of very delicately. Randall explains the rules to Billy but his friends aren’t nearly as disciplined and make many reckless errors in taking care of Gizmo which causes Gizmo’s side effects to rear their ugly heads.

#1 Kevin McAllister-Home Alone (1990)

Kevin might be the most relatable Christmas character. He is caught up in the crisis of his family getting ready to take a Christmas vacation trip until he gets into an argument with his older brother, Buzz, and is sent to his room as punishment. The next morning amidst the chaos of the family, forgot about Kevin, who has the house all to himself. Kevin, as with any kid of his age, enjoys the alone time to do whatever he wants.

However, his home alone fantasy would come to an abrupt halt, as two burglars, Harry and Marv, attempt to rob the house. Kevin wasn’t just going to sit by as the duo ransacked his house. Kevin, being the mischievous boy that he is, sets up many booby traps around the house to make life for Harry and Marv a living hell.
