Super Bowl 59 had many storylines heading into the game. The biggest headline included the AFC representative Kansas City Chiefs chasing history as the first team to three-peat since the Green Bay Packers won three straight from 1965-1967. That wasn’t the only major story however, as the NFC representative Philadelphia Eagles were seeking revenge after a heart crushing 38-35 loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57. Would the Chiefs complete the dream run? Or would the Eagles revenge tour come to fruition? Let’s find out.
Super Bowl 59 would start out quiet with both teams punting on their first possessions. Philadelphia would break the silence on a 2nd and 11 on Kansas City’s 28 yard line, when Eagles star Quarterback Jalen Hurts would complete a deep pass to Wide Receiver Jahan Dotson for a 27 yard gain down to the Chiefs 1 yard line. Jalen Hurts would run up the middle to score the first touchdown of the game to take an early 7-0 lead with 6:15 to go in the first quarter.
The Eagles top ranked defense would force another Chiefs punt and another promising drive ensued. Philadelphia would drive down to the Chiefs 30 yard line and seek to expand the lead. Unfortunately Jalen Hurts, who otherwise had a strong performance, was picked off by Chiefs safety Bryan Cook at the 2 yard line. Kansas City however couldn’t capitalize on this opportunity and the Philadelphia defense forced another punt.
Steve Spagnolo’s(Chiefs Defensive Coordinator) defense got a huge stop on their own 30 yard line to force a Jake Elliot field goal. Elliot would convert on the 48 yard try to extend the lead to 10-0. The next Kansas City drive however, is where everything unraveled as Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes was sacked on back to back plays by Josh Sweat and Jalynx Hunt respectively. The very next play on a 3rd and 16 on their own 24 yard line, Eagles stud rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean recorded his first career NFL interception on his birthday and returned it 38 yards to the end zone to extend the lead to 17-0.
After another exchange of punts, Eagles 1st Team All Pro linebacker Zach Baun picked off Patrick Mahomes at the Chiefs 14 yard line. Jalen Hurts would hit star wide receiver AJ Brown on a short pass for a 12 yard score two plays later for an overwhelming 24-0 lead heading into halftime. Everyone watching was in disbelief that the first half of the Super Bowl was so one sided. It looked like your average high school or college football blowout.
The second half started just as ugly with a 29 yard field goal from Jake Elliot and a 46 yard touchdown pass by Jalen Hurts to Devonta Smith to extend the Eagles lead to 34-0. Kansas City finally got on the board when Patrick Mahomes threw a 24 yard pass to rookie standout wide receiver Xavier Worthy for a touchdown with 34 seconds to go in the third quarter. The Chiefs would attempt a two point conversion but couldn’t convert.
Jake Elliot would record his third field goal to extend the lead to 37-6 with 9:51 to go in the fourth quarter. Vic Fangio’s(Eagles defensive coordinator) defense came up huge again when defensive tackle Milton Williams strip sacked Patrick Mahomes and recovered a fumble. The fumble would lead to another Jake Elliot field goal to extend the lead to 40-6. Philadelphia would end up scoring 17 points on three Kansas City turnovers. The Chiefs put up some late scores with Patrick Mahomes throwing two more touchdown passes to Justin Watson and Xavier Worthy. But the efforts were unfortunately too little too late.
As the clock struck zero, the green and grey confetti erupted as the Philadelphia Eagles won their fifth NFL championship and second Super Bowl in franchise history. The Philly revenge tour was now complete as everyone that was either apart of the Eagles organization or as a fan had their Christmas wish come true.
