When it comes to the Christmas season, one of the main aspects of enjoying it is watching Christmas movies.
Everyone knows of the movie Elf or Home Alone. And how could anyone forget Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or Frosty the Snowman?
They are all absolutely classic movies, don’t get me wrong. But there are a few Christmas movies that have flown under the radar, whether it is because it faded out of the mainstream or if it never had its time in the spotlight at all, that are worth looking into. They may not be the most popular, but they each have a certain charm to them that is often overlooked or just not known. Without further ado, here are the top 3 underrated Christmas movies in no particular order.
The first movie on my list is called The Little Drummer Boy. It is an older movie made in the stop-motion animation style that many other Christmas movies share. Without saying too much, The Little Drummer Boy follows a young orphan boy and his animal companions who live in Israel.
He hates humanity with a passion after everything he has been through, but has a chance encounter with the Three Wise Men that ends up changing his life forever once he gets tangled up with them. It is based on the song that shares the same name and brings their own rendition of it that just feels different in a good way. The movie is rather simple, but has a powerful impact that goes beyond the movie’s relatively small scope.

The second movie on my list is called Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. This movie is also in the stop-motion animation style. There really is something timeless about those movies. This movie goes into the origin of Santa Claus and the magic that Christmas brings. Stress and rage is rampant currently and it is important to feel joy. This movie understands the need for joy and how important it is for it to survive despite all odds. We follow the story of Kris Kringle and how he tries to give toys to the children of a town where toys have been outlawed. He pushes through every obstacle in order to do this, showing how essential it is to be determined to bring joy and hope to children, especially now. The songs within the movie are all quite fun, especially Fred Astaire’s version of the song the movie is named after. He also is an amazing narrator for the movie. It gives an origin to the Christmas magic that is very fun to see.
The third and final movie on my list is on the newer side compared to the rest of the list. It is often overshadowed by the more popular movie, A Charlie Brown Christmas. It is a good movie, but the movie I want to highlight is I Want A Dog For Christmas Charlie Brown. It mainly focuses on Linus and Lucy’s younger brother, Rerun. Due to the struggles of his current life, he hopes that having a dog will cheer him up so he asks Santa for one. He also develops an attachment to Snoopy and begins playing with him quite often. It is a very wholesome movie that not only celebrates Christmas and the spirit that comes with it, but also expands the world of Peanuts in ways not often seen. Besides, who doesn’t love seeing even more of Snoopy’s shenanigans.
Those are my picks for the top three underrated Christmas movies. Each one has their own appeal and fun that goes under the radar most of the time. There is certainly nothing wrong with the popular movies currently, but it is also good to enjoy the ones many don’t remember or know. They have their own charm after all.
